Woodson's classic work of criticism explores how the education received by blacks has failed to give them an appreciation of themselves as a race and their contributions to history. Woodson puts forward a program that calls for the educated to learn about their past and serve the black community. (Education/Teaching)

First published in 1934 and revised in 1962, this book gathers journalist and historian Joel Augustus Rogers’ columns from the syndicated newspaper feature titled Your History. Patterned after the look of Ripley’s popular Believe It or Not the multiple vignettes in each episode recount short items from Rogers’s research. The feature began in the Pittsburgh Courier in November 1934 and ran through the 1960s.

ONE of the causes of the discovery of America was the translation into action of the desire of European zealots to extend the Catholic religion into other parts. Columbus, we are told, was decidedly missionary in his efforts and felt that he could not make a more significant contribution to the church than to open new fields for Christian endeavor. His final success in securing the equipment adequate to the adventure upon the high seas was to some extent determined by the Christian motives impelling the sovereigns of Spain to finance the expedition for the reason that it might afford an opportunity for promoting the cause of Christ. Some of the French who came to the new world to establish their claims by further discovery and exploration, moreover, were either actuated by similar motives or welcomed the cooperation of earnest workers thus interested. The first persons proselyted by the Spanish and French missionaries were Indians. There was not any particular thought of the Negro.

2019 Reprint of 1910 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. "In 1910 the Dixie Publishing Company Published The Jew and Negro by Rev. Arthur T. Abernethy, a preacher, professor and rustic journalist. The author sought to demonstrate through "ethnology" and "Scriptural proofs" that 'the Jew of to-day, as well as his ancestors in other times, is the kinsman and descendant of the Negro.' Behind the book lay a century of transatlantic speculation on the racial status of the Jew." Leonard Rogoff, Is the Jew White?: The Racial Place of the Southern Jew. 1997.

Right now melanin, the aromatic biopolymer and organic semiconductor that makes Black people black is worth over $380 a gram more than gold. In just a few short years, on August 13, 2020 the Red, Black and Green flag will be celebrated as the colors of all African people. We also know the song lyric "Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds," commonly associated with Bob Marley, actually originated with Marcus Garvey. “We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery, for though others may free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind.” Those are the words Marcus Garvey spoke in either October or November 1937. The place? Menelik Hall in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This selection of sayings of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, provides an introduction to the mind of a man capable of speaking words into existence which continue to have a profound impact on those who hear them to this very day. Marcus Garvey was a journalist, editor, publisher, as well as founder, and President-General of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA.) This book serves as an introduction to the philosophy which made his ideas known worldwide. Notable among them is the phrase which has come to many sung as a paraphrased lyric by Bob Marley. Its organic power and compelling urge for a new mental state among the human race can not seriously be denied. This book is a distillation of Garvey thought. The product of years studying the words works and deeds of a man who left a legacy that is still so potent efforts continue to dissuade seekers of truth from his vision. ''Black people are not dark-skinned white people,'' says advertising visionary Tom Burrell. In fact, they are a lot more. They are survivors of the Middle Passage and centuries of humiliation and deprivation, who have excelled against the odds, constantly making a way out of ''no way! '' At this point in history, the idea of black inferiority should have had a ''Going-Out-of-Business Sale.'' After all, Barack Obama has reached the Promised Land. Yet, as Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority testifies, too much of black America is still wandering in the wilderness. In this powerful examination of ''the greatest propaganda campaign of all time'' - the masterful marketing of black inferiority - Burrell poses 10 provocative questions that will make black people look in the mirror and ask why, nearly 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, so many blacks still think like slaves. Brainwashed is not a reprimand; it is a call to deprogram ourselves of self-defeating attitudes and actions. Racism is not the issue; how we respond to racism is the issue. We must undo negative brainwashing and claim a new state of race-based self-esteem and self-actualization.

From the era of slavery to the present day, the first full history of black America’s shocking mistreatment as unwilling and unwitting experimental subjects at the hands of the medical establishment. Medical Apartheid is the first and only comprehensive history of medical experimentation on African Americans. Starting with the earliest encounters between black Americans and Western medical researchers and the racist pseudoscience that resulted, it details the ways both slaves and freedmen were used in hospitals for experiments conducted without their knowledge—a tradition that continues today within some black populations. It reveals how blacks have historically been prey to grave-robbing as well as unauthorized autopsies and dissections. Moving into the twentieth century, it shows how the pseudoscience of eugenics and social Darwinism was used to justify experimental exploitation and shoddy medical treatment of blacks, and the view that they were biologically inferior, oversexed, and unfit for adult responsibilities. Shocking new details about the government’s notorious Tuskegee experiment are revealed, as are similar, less-well-known medical atrocities conducted by the government, the armed forces, prisons, and private institutions. The product of years of prodigious research into medical journals and experimental reports long undisturbed, Medical Apartheid reveals the hidden underbelly of scientific research and makes possible, for the first time, an understanding of the roots of the African American health deficit. At last, it provides the fullest possible context for comprehending the behavioral fallout that has caused black Americans to view researchers—and indeed the whole medical establishment—with such deep distrust. No one concerned with issues of public health and racial justice can afford not to read Medical Apartheid, a masterful book that will stir up both controversy and long-needed debate.
